Live Walking Tour: The Quack DoctorDate: 28th July (12:00)Price: £15.00 Duration: 1 hour
Thursdays at 6pm while lockdown lasts. This virtual tour begins considers the mis-spent life of Lionel Lockyer (1600-1672), an unqualified doctor who claimed to have trapped sunshine in a pill which he called the Sunlight Pill. He claimed it could cure anything from headaches to the plague.
Covid? Pah! Satisfied customers from Barking to Jamaica wrote how well a dose relieved them at both ends. He not only lived through both the Great Plague in 1665 and the Great Fire in 1666, but thrived during them. Okay his pill had no effect on the plague really, but neither did the remedies of the bona fide doctors, and Lockyer's useless treatment was a quarter of the price! We follow him on his rounds delivering boxes of the 'magic' tablet to traders all over the City of London.
