Virtual tour: William Shakespeare retired as chief playwright for his acting company The King's Men in 1612 and handed over to John Fletcher with whom he had already collaborated on a number of projects. Fletcher was a fun-loving party animal who threw a memorable bash at his Bankside lodgings recaled by John Taylor the water poet. A dandy of the time, he dressed in expensive clothes and caught the plague from which he died because he waited too long to collect a new suit in 1625.
